This resource manual provides background about an initiative of the United States Department of Labor to help employers understand the impact that drug abuse may have on their businesses and presents information and resource materials related to actions that can help address the problem.
Abstract
The manual explains that approximately 71 percent of drug users are employed and that they cost businesses billions of dollars annually in lost productivity and increased health care costs. Large businesses have increasingly instituted drug abuse programs to respond to these problems in recent years. However, smaller businesses have been less responsive. The Department of Labor established the Working Partners Initiative to help address this issue. The materials available through the Working Partners Program and presented in this manual are in the public domain for reproduction and distribution. The materials include industry-specific fact sheets and company success stories, an employer resource list, a flier listing helplines for employees, and a flier to help supervisors identify a performance problem that may relate to drug abuse. Additional materials available include a poster, a videotape, and public service announcements. Information is given about where to obtain the materials.
