This magazine presents 12 articles related to the Weed and Seed Program, the Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) Program, housing initiatives, and community conflict resolution.
Abstract
Individual articles explain the Young Astronaut Program and curriculum being used at 16 Weed and Seed sites to expand children's awareness and help them understand the world and space; the link between affordable housing and homelessness; and the Weed and Seed Online Community Center as a forum for sites to exchange strategies for youth involvement, community service, police-juvenile relations, and other areas. Additional articles explain Weed and Seed efforts in Syracuse, NY, to restore a deteriorated neighborhood, increase homeownership, and improve housing quality; the homeless intervention project in Clearwater, FL; and a conference that brought together DEFY youth from Tucson, AZ, and Gary, IN. Further articles focus on the District of Columbia's DEFY program, efforts to reclaim abandoned properties, and the diversity of community mediation centers and their success in helping communities resolve most issues before they become problems and find effective solutions to major community problems.
