From 1990 through 1999, 32 officers were killed in the line of duty in Missouri. This was an average of 3.2 officers killed annually. Of the total, 15 (46.9 percent) were killed by felonious acts, and 17 officers (53.1 percent) were killed as a result of accident or by negligence. Of the 15 killed by felonious acts, 14 (93.3 percent) were killed by firearms and one officer was killed by another weapon (vehicle). In 1999 one officer was killed feloniously, and two were killed accidentally in the line of duty. There were 2,033 officer assaults reported during 1999. Of these, 23.1 percent resulted in injury to an officer. For every 100 officers in the State, it was estimated there were 20.7 officer assaults. One officer was assaulted in the State every 4.3 hours. In 80.2 percent of the officer assaults in 1999, physical force was used by the assailant, and in 19.8 percent of the cases, a weapon of some type was used. Law enforcement officers sustained other injuries while performing their law enforcement duties. Law enforcement agencies reported that 16,483 persons were employed full-time in 1999. It was estimated that 17,610 persons were actually employed statewide. Of these, 70.6 percent were sworn officers, and 29.4 percent were civilians.
