The Texas Exile program is a statewide crime control initiative that focuses on removing guns from criminals without infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens and that makes a convicted felon in possession of a firearm eligible for prosecution under Federal sentencing guidelines.
Abstract
Texas Exile uses Federal sentencing guidelines to ensure that offenders who commit crimes with illegal guns receive tougher and longer sentences with no possibility of parole. Those convicted through the Exile program serve their sentences in Federal prisons. Convicted felons, drug traffickers, and fugitives caught with a weapon are all eligible for conviction under Texas Exile. The success of Texas Exile has resulted from 10 special prosecutors who work with the Texas assistant United States attorneys to prosecute these cases.
