This article describes the work of the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) in countering Internet crime.
Abstract
The IFCC was established by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. The IFCC uses procedures and personnel to foster effective coordination of Internet fraud investigations among Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies. A dedicated web site located at http://www.ifccfbi.gov provides consumers and small businesses nationwide with the ability to file Internet fraud complaints online with the IFCC. By facilitating the flow of information between law enforcement agencies and victims of fraud, the IFCC streamlines the case initiation effort on behalf of both the victim and the law enforcement agencies. The key to the IFCC's success is its ability to relay timely and complete information to the appropriate local, State, and/or Federal law enforcement agencies. With the IFCC, all levels of law enforcement receive the data they need to identify and address new fraud trends. This article includes discussions of short-term IFCC milestones, the release of the IFCC "Six-Month Data Trend Report," the long-term potential of the IFCC, and the benefits of an agency involvement in the work of the IFCC. 3 footnotes
