Police statistics from 32 countries formed the basis of a comparison between crime trends during 1995-99 in the countries in the European Union (EU), the EU applicant countries, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the United States, and other selected countries.
Abstract
Results revealed that total recorded crime declined by 1 percent in the EU member countries and by 10 percent in England and Wales during the study period. In addition, England and Wales had one of the lowest homicide rates in Western Europe for 1997-99. Moreover, violent crime increased by an average of 11 percent in the EU and by 20 percent in England and Wales. Residential burglaries declined an average of 14 percent in the EU and 31 percent in England and Wales. Drug trafficking offenses increased by 31 percent in the EU and declined 6 percent in England and Wales. England and Wales had 125 prisoners per 100,000 general population in 1999; this rate was one of the highest per capita in Western Europe. Figures, tables, and footnotes
