Abstract
The 45 juvenile court circuits disposed 88,424 referrals in 1999, a 14 percent increase over the 6-year period since 1994 and a 2 percent increase over 1998. Males accounted for 66 percent of the referrals; white youth comprised 71 percent of the referral population. Fifty-six percent of the referrals were for law violations. Seventy-eight percent of the referrals were disposed informally. Out-of-home placements involved 6,880 referrals; abuse, neglect, and custody referrals comprised 58 percent of all out-of-home placements. Law violation referrals accounted for 25 percent of these referrals, status referrals accounted for 11 percent, and administrative referrals and miscoded referrals each totaled 3 percent.
