From the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, this CD-ROM comprises databases from the 1992 and 1996 Civil Justice Surveys of State Courts for the analysis of criminal justice statistics. This CD-ROM contains four main directories including “readme” files in both text and portable document formats and file folders of the 1992 and the 1996 survey datasets. Computer-readable codebooks, provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files, are included on this CD-ROM and may be accessed, according to the “readme” files, using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader, available for free at www.adobe.com. SAS and SPSS setup files corresponding to ASCII data files are included in both the 1992 and 1996 file folders. Within each file folder are codebooks, data files, data definition statements for SAS and SPSS, and study descriptions. Each of the types of files is included in a directory and is named as indicated. The file folder for the Civil Justice Survey of State Courts for 1992 includes a codebook for all 1992 data files; tort, contract, and real property rights data files; SAS and SPSS data definition statements for tort, contract, and real property rights data; Civil Jury data files; SAS and SPSS data definition statements for Civil Jury Data; and study descriptions. The file folder for the 1996 data files includes the same data categories, listed in the 1992 folder, from the survey conducted in 1996.
