The manual first exposes 17 myths about domestic violence by presenting facts that challenge each myth. This is followed by an outline of 18 general facts about domestic violence. Materials on the adverse effects of domestic violence consider the workplace costs of domestic violence and the lethality of unchecked domestic violence, as battered women are killed or kill the perpetrator in self-defense. Charts show the various aspects of power-and-control behavior in teenage abusive dating relationships as well as in violent physical and sexual abuse. These charts are compared with a chart that shows the characteristics of a relationship of equality and nonviolence between partners. Another chart portrays the cycle of violence. Thirteen indicators of domestic abuse are then listed, followed by an outline of the steps for conducting a routine direct inquiry about domestic violence. Profiles of battered women and battering men are presented, along with a checklist for individuals to use in determining whether or not they are in an abusive situation.
