This introductory text examined where terrorism came from, where it is today, where it seems to be going upon entering the new millennium and issues requiring countermeasures to prevent getting there.
Abstract
This is an introductory text on the subject of terrorism, viewed as complex and rapidly changing. It provides an overview of the past, present, and future of terrorism. The book is intended as a didactic volume, geared to teachers, students, and the casual reader. In the course of reading this book, most terrorism actions would be seen as poorly articulated groups of fanatics, dissidents or crazies, often with conflicting goals and little interface. However, it becomes apparent that many of them are carefully planning to upset the feeling of security and safety for persons, places, and things. The book’s intent is to stimulate students and readers to seek out ways to understand methods to offer better safety and security for all worldwide. This text is divided into three major parts: (1) the History and Evolution of Terrorism; (2) Terrorism Around the World; and (3) Counter Terrorism Contained. Within these three sections, there are fourteen chapters that built from an historical background to predictions about the 21st Century for terrorism. Included within the text, are “Terrorism Bytes,” “Terrorism Briefs,” and “Terrorism Players” that were carefully selected for their content and applicability to terrorism. Endnotes and Indexes
