This paper summarizes an evaluation of the four Kainos Communities or Christian centered therapeutic programs established in the Prison System of England and Wales.
Abstract
The objective of this evaluation was to determine the impact of the Kainos approach on the prisoners who participated in these programs. It analyzed their attitudes and behaviors such as perceptions regarding race and religion along with reconviction rates. Through this evaluation, the researchers determined that the Kainos programs were not as successful as hoped. There was no statistically significant difference between the reconviction rates of those prisoners who had participated in the Kainos Community programs and those who did not. The researchers believed that even though there were constructive effects in individual cases, such as engendering more positive attitudes and behaviors in some areas, it did not mean that this program is right for every individual or establishment. The evaluation concludes that the Kainos method may be more successful if it is used in conjunction with other after-care programs.
