This article describes measures that have been taken to heighten computer security against the potential threat of cyberterrorism.
Abstract
The Assistant Chief of the National Infrastructure Center of the FBI states that it is crucial to heighten computer security, especially with the increased use of information technology and vulnerability of systems to interference. He discusses the establishment of National Infrastructure Protective Center (NIPC) in 1998 and its programs designed to focus on computer threats to critical infrastructures. In addition to fostering cooperation among government agencies, the Center has maintained a relationship with the private sector where it promoted the establishment of Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISACs). Other initiatives created by the NIPC to counter cyberterrorism in the United States and abroad, include the President’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board set up after the September 11 attacks to coordinate the security of information systems. Even though no cyberterrorist attack has occurred, the threat cannot be discounted, especially because it is global in scope and effect. International cooperation and information sharing are essential elements to any effective response.
