This booklet describes what the British Government is doing to counter the causes and consequences of drug abuse.
Abstract
One of the key Government initiatives is the designation of more than 200 million pounds of extra funding for Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships and Drug Action Teams in their efforts to build stronger community links and help the police and local communities address neighborhood drug problems and associated crime. An extra 5 million pounds has been allotted to promote sports involvement and expand the Positive Futures program throughout the country, as well as to help youth withstand the pressure to become involved in drugs and crime. Further, the Government has encouraged local and national businesses to become involved in the fight against drugs and to support local action in the communities in which they are based. A new Communities Against Drugs Toolkit has been made available at the following Web site: www.crimereduction.gov.uk. A Drugs Hotline has also been established. Government strategies for reducing the illegal drug supply include the disruption of supply lines, from the international trafficker to the local dealer. The Government also aims to decrease the consumer base by helping addicts escape the drug culture and reclaim their own future through treatment, training, and employment.
