This report lists the documents, training sessions, and other products and activities produced under a Bureau of Justice Assistance grant to support the assessment and enhancement of indigent defense services.
Abstract
The 22 documents include a blueprint for designing the National Defender Leadership Institute to develop, train, and support public defense leadership; guidelines to inform the design, implementation, and improvement of indigent defense systems; and an analysis of the importance to the criminal justice system of adequately funded indigent defense structures. The 15 training sessions that took place during 1995-2000 focused on communication skills, defender leadership, training of trainers, the integration of social services into defense advocacy, the handling of expert testimony at trial, issues for appellate defenders, and issues related to capital punishment. Additional activities supported by the grant included three audio-video training programs, seven conferences and meetings, the National Clearinghouse for Defense Services, a web site and web-based training, a chief defender database, and listservs. Attached letters from the Chief Counsel of the Defender Legal Services Division
