This document describes the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT).
Abstract
The Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) is a university-affiliated laboratory dedicated to research and development of energetic and explosive materials. EMRTC also develops tools to analyze material interactions, including the development and use of hydrodynamic codes, which have proven to be a very valuable tool when analyzing explosive reactions. The field-testing laboratory is used to support various large- and small-scale explosive experiments to include fragment projector experiments, target response to single and multiple impacts, and vehicle and running engine experiments. Firing sites can accommodate detonations of up to 20,000 pounds of explosives. High-speed photography and electronic devices record data during explosive events. NMT contributes to the Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP) Emergency Responder Training Program through the delivery of explosive and incendiary training to emergency responder personnel. NMT provides both awareness and operations level Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings Courses. The awareness level course is taught at State and local emergency response training centers throughout the United States and the operations-level course is taught on site at NMT. The Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings-Awareness is a four-hour course designed to provide basic instruction on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) terrorist incidents, with a focus on explosives and incendiary devices. The Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings-Operations is a 32-hour technical level course designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to evaluate and respond effectively to incidents of terrorism that involve energetic materials and other WMD.
