Abstract
In 1985, the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) was established by the United States Department of State as a vehicle for security cooperation. OSAC has become a forum for government and business representatives to produce materials that will offer guidance, suggestions, and planning techniques in the area of security. This pamphlet was developed by OSAC for overseas business travelers and offers basic and effective security precautionary information in the areas of travel preparation and personal security while in a foreign country. When preparing for overseas travel, the following issues of security concern should be addressed: (1) the publicizing of one’s travel itinerary; (2) having a valid passport and visa; (3) important documents, such as driver’s license, credit cards, and traveler’s checks; (4) health insurance information; (5) luggage; (6) transportation hub security; (7) hotel security; (8) arrival and departure from the hotel; and (9) fire emergency procedures. Several personal security issues while in a foreign country are addressed: (1) street smarts; (2) workplace security; (3) personal conduct; (4) arrest process; and (5) targeted surveillance and recognition.
