Abstract
As a joint partnership between Federal, State, and local law enforcement and the community Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) was unveiled by President George W. Bush in 2001. PSN is a national commitment to reduce gun crime in America to by networking existing local programs that target gun crimes and then provide the tools needed in the communities for law enforcement to be successful. The PSN initiative is comprised of three parts: uncompromising law enforcement, community intolerance, and involve/assist programs to create non-violent communities. PSN is a join effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Department of Justice (DOJ), National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), and National District Attorneys Association (NDAA). The tool kit provides PSN partners with extensive and comprehensive information essential in implementing a successful PSN initiative. The kit consists of several components of information: (1) an introductory video on PSN; (2) an implementation guide with an overview of firearms initiatives, model programs, and an overview of the five essential law enforcement elements for a strategic plan; (3) training material including a roll-call training CD; (4) community outreach and public awareness material; (5) resource material to aid in research, training, and community outreach; (6) reference library, 12th edition on CD; (7) generic Federal firearms laws; (8) reproducible poster disks; and (9) NCPC reference and resource material for the community.
