This article is an individual case study of self-mutilation behavior as treated by an emergency medical technician.
Abstract
The author presents a review of the immediate treatment of an admitted self-mutilators. He further discusses the reasons why people adopt self-mutilating behavior, the types of other disorders associated with the employment of self-mutilating behavior, the overall prevalence of the behavior in the general population, the differences between self-mutilating behavior and suicidal behavior and the limitations concerning treatment options. The clinical research reviewed by the author does not indicate that a clearly effective treatment exists for the behavior, therefore, the author suggests that health care providers seek more education on the topic and explore an interdisciplinary approach when treating patients who exhibit the behavior.
