The average number of in-State offenders incarcerated in Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions in January 2002 was 28,134. This was a 0.2-percent decrease from the 28,193 average inmate population in custody previous month and a 3.5-percent increase from the average population (27,184) recorded 1 year ago. In January 2002, the average number of out-of-State offenders housed in contract beds was 3,291. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 31,425 offenders. A total probation and parole caseload of 43,092 was reported for January 2002, with 4,809 active parolees and 38,283 active probationers, a 0.8-percent increase from the 42,755 active caseloads reported last month. Tabular data were broken down by type of facility and individual institutions, as well as type of community supervision (intensive supervision and home electronic monitoring). Data were also provided on the average DOC population for each month from July 2001 through June 2002, distinguished according to field units and work centers, out-of-State offenders, and major institutions and private prisons.
