Abstract
The Federal Government is one of the biggest sources of funding. The Crime Act of 1994 infused more than $30 billion over 6 years into the criminal justice system. Congress continues to designate funding through the bureaus and offices of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Funding from the DOJ is available from its COPS office and from seven main branches of the Office of Justice Programs (OJP). The OJP publishes a list called At-A-Glance, which provides brief descriptions of all OJP funding opportunities, the amount available, who can apply, and the status of program regulation, guidelines, reports, and application kits. The article includes address information, including URL's, for the organizations mentioned. It discusses formula and discretionary grants; the DOJ Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office; the Information Technology Initiative for computer and communications equipment; establishing, integrating, and upgrading criminal justice information systems and identification technologies; funding sources beyond the justice department; and guidelines on how to write grant applications.
