This is an instructional guide for researchers designed to educate researchers about the concerns and priorities of service providers when participating in clinical and social science research concerning violence against women.
Abstract
This videotape produced by the National Center for Violence Against Women Prevention Research is designed to educate researchers on the needs and concerns of public health, victims' rights, and other professional victims' assistance service providers regarding participation of those service providers and their clients in research projects. The video consists of on camera interview segments with individual service providers and researchers discussing their individual experience with research participation. Interview topics include the value of research to practitioners, barriers to successful practitioner/researcher collaboration, special issues in dealing with student researchers, ethical concerns and the critical role of confidentiality of subject information, the importance of diversity among research subjects and researchers, and the critical role of feedback to practitioners in fostering a positive and effective research experience. Suggestions are made to researchers regarding successful methods to approach victims assistance practitioners about allowing access to their programs for research and also on how to successfully manage the collaborative relationship between the practitioner gate-keeper and the researcher and research staff.
