In this article, the author reviews the challenges and difficulties of international experiences with implementing problem-oriented policing (POP). Discussing side effects of such policing techniques, including displacement of crime and diffusion of prevention benefits, the article discusses how the concept of POP involves the extensive observation of and addressing of underlying community problems. Emphasizing that POP programs need close monitoring by police management, the author argues that POP is a time consuming endeavor that requires intensive community involvement in order to address and resolve crime issues within communities. Presenting experiments with POP and community policing (COP), this article discusses some “specifically-directed efforts” employed by Danish communities.
