The management of sex offenders is a critical challenge facing criminal justice professionals. The most effective approaches and critical elements in the management of sex offenders include a collaborative approach, specialized or intensive supervision and the link between supervision and treatment, including victims and advocates to create a victim-centered philosophy and approach, and sex offender specific treatment. Several elements of effective treatment include: (1) beginning with a focus on the key goal of treatment; (2) making treatment available across correctional settings; and (3) applying sound treatment methods. Effective treatment interventions, whether offered in the community, residential, or prison setting, incorporate a variety of approaches including: cognitive-behavioral techniques, relapse prevention strategies, psychopharmacology, group therapy, and treatment planning. Sex offenders must be given the tools to control their behavior internally and be provided simultaneously with sufficient external support to prevent future offending.
