The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services is designed to collect data on the location, characteristics, and use of alcoholism and drug abuse treatment facilities and services in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and other United States jurisdictions. In 2000, a total of 13,428 facilities responded. Findings showed that a 1-day census of 1,000,896 clients received substance abuse treatment on October 1, 2000. Private non-profit facilities made up 60 percent of the system, followed by private for-profit (26 percent), and State/local government (11 percent). Over half of all facilities had managed care contracts in 2000, as compared to 42 percent in 1996. Outpatient rehabilitation was the most widely available type of care, with non-intensive outpatient rehabilitation offered by 78 percent of all facilities and intensive outpatient rehabilitation offered by 46 percent of all facilities. Residential rehabilitation was offered by 26 percent of all facilities, followed by partial hospitalization programs and outpatient detoxification. Half of all facilities offered special programs for the dually diagnosed with both mental and substance abuse disorders. More than one-third of facilities had programs for adolescents or offered driving under the influence/driving while intoxicated programs. Nearly half of all clients were in treatment for both alcohol and drug abuse. Twenty-nine percent of clients were treated for drug abuse only, while 23 percent were treated for alcohol abuse.
