This study utilized case studies to examine the effectiveness of oral fluid drug testing versus urine collection and analysis in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Abstract
In May 2000, the Anne Arundel County Drug Court in Maryland implemented the use of oral fluid drug testing, specifically the Intercept oral fluid drug test from OraSure Technologies to address collection delays and logistics issues. The county drug court conducts drug tests on approximately 150 enrollees, tested twice per week. Four case studies are outlined where an analysis was conducted using both the oral fluid drug and the urine testing methods to determine the oral fluid drug’s testing effectiveness as a screening tool in a drug court setting. Results indicated that the Anne Arundel Drug Court testing program remained effective with both oral fluid and urine testing procedures. The oral fluid option was seen to be an effective tool for reducing collection delays, adulteration concerns, and staff utilization.
