Presenting data collected from the North Dakota Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, this report summarizes North Dakota’s crime statistics for 2001. The various statistics presented in this report were reported to the UCR program by 43 sheriff’s departments and 28 police departments through the use of both standard incident forms and summary reporting of the number of crime index offenses and arrests for each month. After reporting that in 2001, 14,411 crime index offenses were reported by local law enforcement agencies, for an increase of 1.8 percent from the total reported in 2000, this report describes crime index offenses as murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft. Citing a 3.1 percent overall increase in North Dakota’s crime rate, this report breaks down the percentages accounted for by violent crimes, property crimes, and drug offenses. The bulk of this report is a series of tables, charts, and graphs detailing the number and types of crimes reported to the UCR program for 2001 and comparing the 2001 statistics to other years, beginning with 1992. Statistics and comparisons are made for each of the categories of violent and property crime described above as crime index offenses. Following a brief presentation of crime index offenses by county and reporting jurisdiction, this report presents charts and statistics detailing the North Dakota arrests made in 2001 by age, gender, race, type of crime, and reporting jurisdiction. Following a series of tables comparing arrest statistics from 1992 through 2001, this report describes UCR offense definitions and charts North Dakota’s full-time law enforcement employees by agency.
