This article examines the development, design, and implementation of distance learning programs for criminal justice professionals in the United Kingdom.
Abstract
The author defines distance learning as the delivery of an education program using a wide range of delivery methods. The key feature of a distance learning program is that the students set their own pace of study. Although in the past police officers in the United Kingdom demonstrated a reluctance to engage in educational pursuits, by the early 1990’s there was a move to create distance learning education programs for criminal justice professionals. The author discusses the stages involved in designing, developing, and managing high-quality distance learning programs. The Quality Assurance Agency’s Guidelines on the Quality Assurance of Distance Learning is discussed as providing guidelines on the standards and quality of distance learning programs offered by major universities. The author shows how to create a distance learning program using these guidelines, which the author admits can be imposing. It is hoped that quality distance learning programs will effectively educate criminal justice professionals. References
