The complex relationship between alcohol, additional drug problems, and addiction and religiousness or spirituality are discussed in this journal article. After stating that studies of spirituality are becoming increasingly important in a variety of clinical fields, the author presents a brief review of literature focusing on spirituality in relationship to addiction studies. Citing the need for additional high-quality quantitative and qualitative research in alcoholism, other addictions, and spirituality, this article presents examples of existing scales and measures available for conducting and analyzing research on spirituality and addiction. In order to help treatment providers and potential researchers, the author describes eight addiction and spiritual research measurement instruments to illustrate the types of available measures and scales, including the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality; the Spiritual Well-Being Scale; the Brown-Peterson Recovery Progress Inventory; the Index of Core Spiritual Experiences; the Religious Background and Behavior Questionnaire; the Matthew Materialism-Spiritualism Scale; the Spiritual Health Inventory; and the Spiritual Beliefs Scale. The selected measures and scales presented in this article were all recommended for use in earlier addiction studies, were conceptually sound, had already published data on their psychometric properties, and were all available for use by addiction and spirituality researchers.
