This 1998 annual report of Hungary's National Institute of Criminology and Criminalistics (NICC) focuses on its organization and activities, which encompass its basic mission of developing theory in the areas of criminology and criminalistics and recommending practical applications in these two disciplines.
Abstract
In the area of criminology, the NICC sponsors research on the morphology, etiology, and prophylactics of crime, as well as the study of actions taken by the government and society regarding crime prevention. In the area of criminalistics, the NICC conducts the theoretical and practical study of methods of crime investigation. In its efforts to put research findings into practice, the NICC publishes research results, participates in training and education, builds and maintains liaisons with criminal justice agencies and researchers, and maintains a library of criminology and criminalistics materials. This report briefly describes the criminology and criminalistics research projects conducted in the 1990's. A more detailed description of NICC's research program for 1995-98 encompasses its role in the development of the National Crime Prevention Program, the publication of professional materials designed to attract public interest, the establishment of a data bank, and the establishment of a training program. Criminology and criminalistics research projects completed and started during this period are briefly described. Other activities described include the collection and use of research results and participation in training and education conferences. A list of NICC publications is provided for the years 1995-98.
