This report presents the results of a project commissioned by the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers Respondent for the Status of Women to obtain information on and maintain awareness of the need to prevent violence against all people in Canada, particularly women.
Abstract
This project, begun in 1999, collected information, by means of a survey of a wide range of stakeholders in Canada, on the extent of violence against women in Canada. The resulting report was intended for use by government organizations, women's organizations, other non-governmental organizations, academics, and policymakers. An extensive number of tables, figures, and boxes are included providing income and earnings trends, comparing victimization surveys, and with extensive statistics on domestic violence. A review of the severity and prevalence of violence against women is included, with a discussion of the impact of violence against women and risk factors associated with it. An overview of institutional and community-based response and victims' use of services is also provided. Public attitudes and perceptions by geographic location in Canada are addressed. In conclusion, it is noted that women are more likely, in terms of severity and prevalence, to be victims of the most severe forms of spousal assault, as well as spousal homicide and sexual assault, with psychological abuse being a strong correlate of the physical abuse. Appendices include information on economic equality indicators; data sources from various and numerous surveys, and criminal code offenses. An extensive list of source references is included.
