Highlighting crime reduction measures and respecting citizen’s rights and the rule of law, this report describes the Ministry’s Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Group and its Public Law Group. Addressing external influences impacting the Ministry of Justice, this report details government mandates, social changes, justice sector complexity, strategic focus, and public expectations affecting New Zealand’s legal framework. Focusing on internal influences impacting the Ministry of Justice, this document discusses ensuring the realization of the New Zealand government’s vision and respecting the environment as chief issues. Discussing New Zealand’s communities, this report details the Ministry of Justice’s crime reduction strategies, aiming to reduce violent crime, youth offending, organized crime, car-related theft, family violence, and burglaries. Focusing on New Zealand’s rule of law, this report discusses the Ministry’s goals of securing a fair and effective justice system, effective relationship between the government and citizens, and maintaining a parliamentary electoral process in which citizens have confidence. Describing the impact that the Ministry’s goals will have on New Zealand’s communities, this report addresses leadership, quality police advice and services, and knowledge and learning.
