Focusing on at risk young people turning to the religion of Islam, this article discusses the ways in which Islam offers some youths social integration and the ability to develop self-identity. Arguing that some youths have been unable to resolve their social problems by various social service agencies, the author of this article contends that, in some cases, local religious organizations are able to provide the social integration that social workers have been unable to provide to at risk youths. In this article, the author questions youths who have turned to the religion of Islam in order to develop self-identity and discusses what happens when social workers have their professional confidence undermined in various ways.
