Abstract
Detailing the ways that geographic information systems (GIS) enable law enforcement officials in the fight against crime, this CD-ROM discusses and demonstrates the importance of GIS mapping. Throughout the CD-ROM, blue text indicates a link to a Web page, either on the Internet or on the CD, which connects the user to additional related information. Red text indicates a link to a document in Adobe Acrobat file format. During a 5 minute introductory presentation discussing the geographic nature of crime and detailing the importance of law enforcement officials’ using GIS mapping in order to protect citizens from crime through providing incident models detailing crime rates and trends, the CD-ROM discusses GIS as a useful tool in mapping what types of crimes occur in which geographic areas, when crimes are most likely to occur, and in encouraging community policing by providing information to communities as well as law enforcement officials. At the completion of the brief presentation, the user is presented with a series of menus allowing the user to read real stories about the use of GIS mapping in various cities throughout the world, detailing the relationship between GIS and law enforcement officials in crime analysis and prevention, discussing a recent prime time television show entitled “The District” that utilizes GIS on its program, and listing free software and data available to users through ArcView Crime Analysis Data Centers. An extensive GIS mapping video presentation, a law enforcement resource list, and a quick summary of the ways to contact the ESRI law enforcement team comprise another series of drop-down menu options. This CD-ROM also provides links to information concerning additional GIS software programs, industries using GIS mapping programs, and information about ESRI and GIS in general.
