When less invasive measures have failed, school officials may consider technological solutions to security. There are several categories of security technology to be considered: keys and smart cards, metal detectors, alarm systems, and surveillance equipment. This article briefly describes several high-tech security technologies. Alternative entry control devices have been developed to reduce unauthorized visitors. One such device is the Smart card which eliminates the replacing or altering of locks and keys. They are integrated with computer software allowing for very specific coding. Metal detectors have been identified as a potential technology for consideration for those schools in a high-crime setting. Issues on the effectiveness of metal detection equipment are reviewed. Alarm systems both detect intruders and signal emergency personnel when immediate help is needed. Alarms can be designed to detect intruders, smoke, or flames. Surveillance equipment is considered appropriate when offenders need to be identified and their actions documented, when hidden areas are attracting problem behaviors and not deterred by the use of other methods, and when the offenders may be students or staff members with legal access to school. Surveillance technology includes the use of closed circuit television (CCTV) and digital video recording (DVR). However, careful consideration and planning must be undertaken before resorting to any high-tech security solutions. Some important considerations include: (1) a cost benefit analysis; (2) a review of potential technological shortcomings; and (3) the ease of expansion, integration, and system upgrades.
