This report presents data on the number of sworn and unsworn police personnel by rank and gender for each of Australia's police forces as of June 30, 2001.
Abstract
The data are presented in tables for Australia's police forces as a whole, for the States and Territories together and then separately, and for the Federal police. For all of Australia there are 44,922 sworn officers, with 36,416 being male and 8,506 being female (18.9 percent). There are 11,627 unsworn public service employees and other personnel, with 4,128 of these being male and 7,499 being female. For the 8 States and Territories, there are a total of 44,922 sworn officers, a rate of 231.7 officers per 100,000 population. For the Federal police responsible for policing the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), there are 597 sworn officers, with 463 being male and 134 being female (22.4 percent). There are 127 unsworn personnel, with 59 being male and 68 being female (53.5 percent). For the Federal police not involved in policing the ACT, there are 1,421 sworn officers, with 1,092 being male and 329 females (23.2 percent). There are 690 unsworn officers, 304 of whom are male and 386 female (55.9 percent). Data are presented by rank and gender for sworn and unsworn personnel for each of the seven States and Territories (excluding the ACT).
