This article briefly discusses the responsibilities of police officers in carrying concealed weapons and the equipment necessary when safely carrying a concealed firearm.
Abstract
Professional law enforcement officers are afforded the privilege of carrying a concealed firearm. However, along with this privilege comes the responsibility of knowing their surroundings at all times; knowing the equipment they are using and keeping it in good, serviceable condition; and being proficient in draw techniques under a myriad of conditions. All of these flow together, mindset, equipment, and technique. Officers cannot have one without the other. Knowing what is going on around them at all times and having a plan for every contingency is necessary. Learning the techniques for handling a concealed weapon is one thing, remaining proficient is another. Learning comes easier with practical exercise of the techniques, working on building speed first then accuracy. Equipment can be the most complicated due to the number of available accessories when considering carrying a concealed weapon. Equipment considerations include most importantly the holster. The holster must fit well in order to work properly with a straight pull fitting better than a downward pull with the natural hand placement of body mechanics. It is imperative that the officers do their homework when finding a holster that is comfortable, durable, and that safely fits their weapon.
