This article outlines the advantages of castration, especially when used to control violent sex offenders.
Abstract
The author begins by explaining that it has been well established that castration can make men and animals less violent by reducing the level of testosterone. As such, the author contends that castration may be an effective and appropriate measure to take with the most violent sex offenders in our society. However, he explains that it is not widely used because of a lack of information about this medical procedure. Conducting controlled experiments designed to uncover the medical and psychological effects of castration on humans is nearly impossible given the nature of the procedure. However, there is some documented evidence pointing to the many advantages of castration. It is the authors’ intention to outline these advantages in order to spread knowledge about castration. Among the advantages he discusses is a decline in aggressive behavior, an increase in asceticism, and a greater life expectancy. The discussion of asceticism centers on different religious views of human life and human sin. In addition, according to the author, castration is a cost effective means of controlling violent and sexual offenders. There has also been some research suggesting that castration may increase intelligence. Finally, the author notes that castration may decrease objectionable body odor, may increase paternal instincts in men, and helps to avert acne. Tables, references
