This book contains chapters written by experts in a number of fields involved in addressing child maltreatment; based on literature reviews of relevant research, the chapters discuss the causes, consequences, treatment, and prevention of child abuse and neglect.
Abstract
This second edition includes an update of retained chapters and over 630 new references to literature. Six new chapters address Munchausen by proxy syndrome, child abuse in the context of substance abuse, child abuse in the context of domestic violence, child fatalities, risk management for professionals who work with maltreated children and adult survivors of childhood abuse, and mental health services for children reported to child protective services. The seven chapters of Part One focus on aspects of child maltreatment, including child neglect; child physical abuse; the sexual abuse of children; psychological maltreatment; and three new chapters on child maltreatment in the contexts of substance abuse and domestic violence, along with a form of child abuse called Munchausen by proxy syndrome. The four chapters of Part Two pertain to psychosocial treatment for abused children and adults who were abused as children. Part Three contains four chapters on medical aspects of child maltreatment. The five chapters of Part Four focus on legal aspects of child maltreatment, with attention to the legal system's role in child protection, the criminal investigation of child sexual abuse, interviewing children in and out of court, expert testimony, and risk management for professionals who work with maltreated children and adult survivors of childhood abuse. The concluding five chapters of Part Five discuss prevention and service delivery. Topics covered include child abuse prevention theory and practice, cultural competency in the field of child maltreatment, mental health services for children reported to child protective services, and community organization of services to deal with and end child abuse.
