After describing the need for computer software that could sort, extract, compare, and analyze fraud examination data that has been accumulating for over 10 years, the author describes the Windows-based software program, Monarch from Datawatch, which allows fraud examiners to extract needed information from various reports and generate a database while removing unnecessary detail. Discussing various Monarch applications including comparing employee and vendor addresses, automating and simplifying monthly data analyses, and extracting and analyzing detailed general ledger reports, the author explains that Monarch analyzes data in both HTML and Office formats and may be exported to Excel, Access, Lotus 1-2-3, and FoxPro. Taking the reader through a sample Monarch session, the author presents figures detailing Monarch’s Report View/Table View and Monarch’s Summary View. After describing new features in Monarch’s sixth version of this software program, including the floating trap to capture data, a new address block, lookup fields, and exception coloring, the author concludes that Monarch empowers fraud examiners to easily access needed business intelligence without having to rely on information technology (IT) departments.
