This report presents data about the characteristics of inmates who were discharged from the New York State Department of Correctional Services during the year 2000.
Abstract
The report shows 29,982 inmates were released from New York correctional facilities during 2000. Fifty-nine percent of these inmates were released to parole supervision based on the Parole Board decision, while 10 percent were released at the expiration of their sentences. The remainder of the data presented here describes the 18,776 offenders who were released for the first time in 2000 based on a Parole Board decision, conditional release date, or expiration of their sentence. The descriptive data shows information concerning the released offenders’ length of time served in custody and type of offense committed. Data is broken down by commitment offense, felony class category of commitment offense, and minimum and maximum sentence length. In some cases, data is also presented for the years 1996 through 2000 for comparison purposes. Demographic data on gender, race, ethnicity, and age is included.
