This report presents data about unusual incidents that occurred in New York Department of Correctional Services facilities during calendar year 2001.
Abstract
According to the data presented here, there were a total of 5,444 unusual incidents that occurred in correctional facilities in New York during 2001. Maximum security prisons experienced the highest level of unusual incidents, with a rate of 141.1 incidents for every thousand inmates. Medium security level prisons had a rate of 44.4 incidents, minimum security had a rate of 29.7 incidents, and minimum security camps had a rate of 59.6 unusual incidents per thousand inmates. Weapons were used by inmates in 33.8 percent of the unusual incidents. There were a total of 179 inmate deaths during 2001, including 8 suicides and 3 homicides. Data is also presented for the locations of unusual incidents; inmate assaults on staff and on other inmates; injury to staff; and type of force used to resolve the unusual incidents. Statistics are offered in both narrative form and in tables.
