There are an estimated 78 jurisdictions that meet this criterion and account for approximately 65 percent of the crimes reported in the State. Crime counts are compared for the first 6 months of 2002 with counts for the same period in 2001. Jurisdictions are grouped into three categories: police departments, sheriff’s departments, and contract cities. Contract cities are incorporated cities that contract for law enforcement services (usually with a sheriff’s department) rather than maintain their own police force. California Crime Index offenses are homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. During the first 6 months of 2002, the number of reported offenses increased 7.5 percent when compared to the same period in 2001. The number of homicides increased 16 percent. Reported forcible rapes increased 3.8 percent. Reported robberies increased 9.2 percent. Aggravated assaults increased 0.3 percent. The number of reported burglaries increased 7 percent. There was a 12.7 percent increase in the number of motor vehicle thefts.
