In the area of research, the Institute has conducted studies on adjudicating and sentencing juveniles as adults, adjudicative competence in juveniles, campus and workplace violence, ethical and legal issues related to genetics, forensic evaluation information system, offenders with mental retardation in Virginia, and women's coping in prison. Other research has pertained to the Center for Children, Families, and the Law; a juvenile offender initiative; the use of social science in law and policy; and the MacArthur Research Network on Mental Health and the Law. A report on the Institute's educational efforts encompasses fellowships, courses at the University of Virginia, symposia, and training programs. Publication efforts have included a report on "Developments in Mental Health Law," a Directory of Forensic Experts in Virginia, and a Web site. The Institute's Forensic Psychiatry Clinic has provided evaluation services for over 20 years, performing juvenile as well as adult evaluations. Criminal cases referred to the clinic by judges and attorneys throughout Virginia, as well as other States, have involved a range of offenses, including capital murder, homicide, stalking, robbery, sexual assault, and property crime.
