This report presents statistical information about client characteristics, population movement, and custody for the Washington State Department of Corrections, fiscal year 2002.
Abstract
Statistical information is presented for admissions to prison in the following categories: new admissions, re-admissions, community custody inmate violations, parole violations, and other admissions. The data indicates that the total admissions in Washington State was 6,155 for fiscal year 2002. The average daily population of inmates in Washington State correctional institutions totaled 15,283 for January, 15,437 for February, and 15,569 for March 2002. Data on releases are offered for the following categories: discharge, released to community custody, released to post-release supervision, released after serving time for violating community custody conditions, paroled inmates, and other releases. The total releases in all categories for fiscal year 2002 totaled 5,907. The types of inmate characteristics recorded in this report include race and ethnicity, offense type, gender, and age. Statistical information is also presented for average length of incarceration, which is recorded as 22.6 months. Data is also offered for the distribution of inmates by correctional institution location. All information in this report is presented in statistical format, with narrative offered only for definitions of terms used.
