This is the annual report of the Office of the Ombudsman in the State of Hawaii for fiscal year 2001-2002.
Abstract
The report explains that the Office of the Ombudsman, State of Hawaii, receives two types of inquiries: information requests and complaints. Information requests are queries that are usually met with a referral to another agency. During fiscal year 2001-2002, the Office received 1,121 information requests. Complaints may be either jurisdictional or non-jurisdictional. The Office of the Ombudsman is authorized to investigate complaints that are jurisdictional, but non-jurisdictional complaints are referred to appropriate agencies. During fiscal year 2001-2001, the Office received 4,024 jurisdictional complaints and 493 non-jurisdictional complaints. Staff changes, outreach efforts, and involvement with the United States Ombudsman Association are also discussed in part 1. In part 2 of the report, tables are presented that offer a 2 year caseload comparison, numbers and types of inquiries by month, means by which inquiries are received, and distribution and disposition of jurisdictional complaints by agency, among others. Part 3 offers summaries of selected cases, which were investigated by the Office during fiscal year 2001-2002. The summaries are organized under the State government department of county government involved in each case. The summaries give a brief account of the case, how it was investigated, what the findings were, and what the final action or resolution was.
