The book explains that there are many temptations in the world today that can lead youth astray. As such, it is important to offer youth an example of healthy and productive living through the practice of mentoring. The book begins by offering the top 10 reasons to mentor, the top 10 suggestions for mentoring, the top 10 mistakes mentors make, and the top 10 clarifications and instructions for mentors. The next section explains what mentoring is about and includes a discussion of the qualifications a mentor should possess. The mentoring commitment is outlined, which explains a mentor’s commitment to the person being mentored, the commitment to the process of mentoring, and the commitment to the purpose of mentoring. In the next section, a plan is outlined for the process of mentoring. Four series are discussed that deal with aspects and issues involved in the mentoring process. The four series are each designed to accompany a 4 week plan for the mentoring relationship. For example, during week one of series one, the mentor is encouraged to take the risk of mentoring a young person; biblical verses are offered as encouragement. During week two of series one, mentors are taught the utility of positive affirmations. The third week in series one focuses on different personality types and how to best maintain a positive relationship with each type of person. Each of the four series contains lesson plans for each of 6 weeks. Mentors are encouraged to review each weekly plan before the week begins so there is time for reflection and further planning before the process of mentoring for the week actually begins.
