This report compares preliminary California crime counts for the first 9 months of 2002 with counts for the same period in 2001 for jurisdictions with populations of 100,000 or more.
Abstract
The jurisdictions are grouped into three categories: police departments, which provide law enforcement services for incorporated cities; sheriff's departments, which provide law enforcement services to unincorporated areas within the county; and contract cities, which are incorporated cities that contract for law enforcement services rather than maintain their own police force. The overall California Crime Index increased 5.3 percent for the first 9 months of 2002 compared with the same period in 2001. The number of violent crimes increased 0.8 percent, and the number of property crimes increased 7.9 percent. Homicides increased 13.1 percent; forcible rapes increased 2.6 percent; robberies increased 4.5 percent; aggravated assault decreased 1.3 percent; burglaries increased 5.1 percent; and motor vehicle theft increased 10.8 percent. The tables present the following information by jurisdictional agency: FBI and California Crime Index total and percentage change, as well as the total number and percentage change for homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson.
