A history of the legislation that has authorized crime victim services is presented, including the Crime Victims Compensation Act of 1976, the Victims of Crime Act of 1984, the Crime Victims Rights Act of 1985, the Constitutional Amendment for Crime Victims Rights, and the Criminal Assessments Act of 1989. According to this report, a total of $1,954,470 was awarded to crime victims as compensation during 2001. Eleven percent of the compensation awards were for burials, 2.2 percent were for dentistry, 17 percent were for earnings losses, 0.2 percent were for forensic exams, 47.2 percent were for hospitalization costs, 0.8 percent were for mental health counseling, 3.2 percent were for support, 16.5 percent were for medical needs, 0.2 percent were for replacement services, and 1.3 percent were for rehabilitation costs. Reasons for denials of claims are presented, as are narratives of awards and denials of claims made during 2001. A table of Characteristics of Decisions by County is presented and a list of agencies that were awarded grants in 2001 to assist victims is offered. Also presented is a listing of Crime Victim Rights Fund Revenues for Michigan area courts and attorneys.
