This handbook is designed to offer practical advice for adults that will help protect children. Step 2 involves minimizing the opportunity for sexual predators to prey on children. Once the risk factors for child sexual abuse are understood, adults can take proactive measures to keep children out of harms way, such as making surprise visits when your child is alone with another adult. Step 3 involves discussing sexual abuse with children, especially in the case of suspected abuse. Step 4 urges parents and other responsible adults to stay alert to the possible signs of sexual abuse in children. Step 5 discusses the efficacy of making a plan on how to respond to suspected child abuse, even before the suspicion arises. Finding out the current and relevant laws and where to seek counseling help is advisable for any parent or adult who supervises children. Step 6 alerts adults to act on suspicions and advises on the most appropriate courses of action when child sexual abuse is suspected.
