The conference began with an open nursing forum. Surviving a lawsuit and buprenorphine non-physician training followed. Other issues explored were the prevention of viral hepatitis in large jail systems, periodontal disease, telephone triage in adult detention, cooperation between security and health care, forensic mental health/mental retardation programming, and an HIV update. A joint nursing and security session focused on custody training. The impact on health care for transitioning inmates, metabolic issues with atypical antipsychotics, suicide prevention, and end-of-life programs in prisons and jails were also discussed, along with psychopharmacology, triaging dental complaints, and the legal implications of restraint chairs. Other issues that were discussed were the partnership of mental health services and administration support, wound care, deliberate indifference and negligence by correctional officers, delivering medications, and the recruitment and retention of the correctional nurse. The issue of an increasing graying population was explored. Cost and utilization issues in corrections, HIV testing for prison inmates, juveniles in adult facilities, physiologic damage from substance abuse, and the role of nursing and patient compliance were detailed. A systems approach to controlling health care costs and improving quality in jails was presented. Finally, methadone treatment in jails and prisons was focused upon. A Skills Fair closed the conference.
